Social Networking for Consultation
I used to work for local government. These councils often had blocks on their internet connections so that they couldn’t “waste time” on Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter. But going on there was often part of the job.
The internet has become a key tool in connecting community members, essentially bringing people back from mere consumerism into citizenship; a technological opportunity as opposed to an obstacle. Disconnecting local government from the people on the ground is an unfortunate accidental result of well-intentioned blocks online to increase efficiency in the workplace.
But now, councils have a real opportunity to catch up and connect with communities in order to meet their needs. SilenceBreakers will only assist with this process, in engaging and empowering people to utilise media in order to vocalise issues important in their communities. Just as we bridge the gaps for the private sector in re-utilising their computers, so we do in gathering information for the public sector.
